Abstract
The authors show the feasibility of a new type of superconducting switch using the negative differential resistance of the current-voltage characteristic curve of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junction (a nontunneling Josephson junction). With the proper choice of load resistor, astable, monostable, or bistable circuits can be designed. The most relevant characteristic features of the proposed superconducting switch are analyzed. The power consumption and the switching speed of the proposed device are described. It is shown that the maximum switching speed of a single SNS multivibrator is on the order of 0.33 ps.<>
