Abstract :
The magnetic anisotropy of PdxCo1-x alloy (0.3⩽x⩽0.85) films and Pd67Co33/NM (NM=Pt, Pd, Cu) multilayers was investigated. Vacuum-deposited PdCo alloy films exhibit uniaxial anisotropy Ku with the easy axis perpendicular to the film plane. The maximum Ku is about 5×106 erg/cm3 for x=0.35 to 0.50. The compositional dependence of Ku is similar to that of the magnetostriction constant λ111, which suggests a magnetostrictive origin. In multilayer films, PdCo/Pt and PdCo/Pd showed positive Ku while PdCo/Cu showed negative Ku. These results suggest that stress-induced anisotropy due to lattice misfit is probably one of the causes of the perpendicular anisotropy in Pd/Co multilayer films
