Abstract :
The Swiss contribution to the international Large Coil Task (LCT) is a D-shaped 2.5*3.5 m2 bore, superconducting toroidal-field coil of 8-T. The conductor is made from fully transposed, Cu-stabilized filamentary NbTi wire. The data taken during the full-array test of the Swiss coil are discussed. In these experiments the coil was energized together with the five background coils and successfully reached several times its rated current of 13 kA, thereby subjecting its conductor to the maximum field of 8.0 T. Additional tests were performed with stationary heat load without driving the coil normal. The full-array and single-coil test results are presented and compared with each other and with predictions.
