Abstract :
A variational method is presented for evaluating the electric and magnetic polarisabilities of a cylindrical hole of small radius a in a wall of infinite thickness. The polarisabilities p = ¿0.09105a3 and m = 0.15062a3 are obtained, and enable the determination of the resonant frequency shifts for a cavity with the small hole.
