Abstract :
Optimisation of the (GaAl)As laser to achieve a low threshold current leads to the suppression of relaxation oscillations and a consequent reduction, not previously reported, in the spectral broadening under pulse conditions. In this letter we describe lasers having these characteristics and their advantages for optical-fibre communications systems.
