Abstract
The author describes how his company managed to balance high performance and adherence to popular standards. For each of various factors he outlines a philosophy behind the factor, lists areas where concern for the factor appears to be practical, beneficial and necessary, and gives the company´s response. The factors are graphics remote and local communications, operating systems, programming languages and numerical computation.
