Abstract :
A quality expert system (QES) prototype for use in the hot strip mill aspect of the steel-making process is described. The QES monitors the process and recommends actions to the user, but it does not directly control the process. The user must adjust operating parameters or change process conditions to improve quality. The QES´s architecture and its knowledge acquisition and knowledge representation are discussed. The way in which the prototype QES would handle a slab with a scale defect is described.<>
