Abstract :
Superconductivity is, arguably, one phenomenon which, pending full development of the supporting technology, will revolutionise electrical power engineering to the same extent that fibre optics has already revolutionised telecommunications engineering. Considerable inroads have been made in Japan towards this end and an overview of this work is presented. The authors discuss superconducting applications in power generators, energy storage (SMES), cables, current limiters, land transportation (Maglev) and sea transportation
