Abstract
A simple technique for splicing optical fibres is reported. The technique utilises a self-aligning ceramic capillary with inner dimensions slightly larger than the optical fibre. An average loss of below 0.1 dB is obtained for splices in graded-index and single-mode fibres with a 50 and 10 ¿m core diameter, respectively.
