Abstract
A general expression is presented for the phase difference between the two polarisation states of the fundamental mode on a monomode fibre with arbitrary refractive-index profile and elliptical cross-section. Numerical results indicate that the degree of circularity required of a practical fibre to achieve a given bandwidth may be less than that predicted by assuming a step-index profile.
