Abstract
Simple formulae have been derived to show the geometrical constraints which determine the resolution of magnetoresistive heads. In the unshielded head the film height is the critical factor which introduces losses which typically reduce the resolution to the order of half the resolution of a conventional inductive head. A shielded MR head has a resolution equivalent to a conventional head having a gap length of between
