Abstract :
The effects of 1.17-MeV and 1.33-MeV gamma rays on the propagation characteristics of a gallium arsenide directional coupler optical waveguide is reported. Under doses of 4100-190000 rad (GaAs), no measurable change in either coupling characteristics or transmission loss was found. However, it is uncertain whether the radiation-induced loss component in the optical waveguides is less than 3 dB. A suggestion for eliminating this optical-alignment-induced experimental uncertainty is given.
