Abstract :
Time-domain simulations show strong 1 GHz pulsations and mode hopping of a uniform-DFB semiconductor laser operated at high output powers. These pulsations are due to asymmetric longitudinal spatial hole burning (SHB) of the carrier density by a high-frequency mode, leading to a pulse in a low-frequency mode. The pulse relaxes the carrier density to a symmetrical profile, which prefers the original mode.
