Abstract
The most important characteristics of the good radio operator are proficiency in the use of the code, skill in the care and adjustment of the apparatus, and reliability in an emergency. The requirements of the commercial companies of the Navy in these directions are considered. The American Morse code is compared with the Continental critically, and is adjudged superior. The use of the "Omnigraph" for test sending is favorably discussed. The requirements for an operator\´s license of any grade are given, and the problem of appropriate and searching examinations therefor is handled. The age distribution of radio operators is given graphically and numerically. The salaries and conditions of promotion of operators in the United States Navy, the American Marconi Company, and the United Fruit Company are compared.
