Abstract
The target-detection problem in the context of two-dimensional active bearing estimation of an underwater (mobile) target from a fast-moving planar array of sensors is addressed. A modified version of the method of adaptive noise cancellation, which adopts a novel approach for securing the requisite estimates of reference-noise samples, is proposed to solve the detection problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of performing target-detection and signal- arrival time estimation with a high degree of reliability even at SNRs as low as -70 dB.
