Abstract :
As part of a development program to construct a selective magnetic separator appropriate for dry or wet separation of large amounts of fine-grained, unclassified minerals with only slightly different magnetic properties, a dry rotating disk separator was constructed with a capacity of 2 tons per hour equipped with iron pole pieces. The dry mineral is fed onto and accelerated by the rotating disk. The design separator shows a sharp partition characteristic. The authors describe the iron pole separator design including construction details of the magnetic circuit, rotating disk, and perturbative forces. Results are presented from a set of preliminary separation tests performed with a simple mixture of magnetic and nonmagnetic materials.
