Abstract :
After defining the terms offense and defense, the interplay of these aspects of warfare through several periods of history is outlined. Subsequent to World War I the offense began to gain ascendancy, and this trend accelerated toward the end of World War II. An analysis of current military weaponry and doctrine leads to the conclusion that defense in the usual sense is not now feasible and that no foreseeable technological developments are likely to change this situation.
