Abstract :
For pt.2 see ibid., vol.7, no.3, p.141 (1993). Two examples of the practical application of expert systems (ES) have been chosen. The first one illustrates the use of an ES for a design problem while the second one demonstrates the assistance of an ES in system operation. The first ES, developed by the authors, determines the best location for substations and distribution-transformers, chooses the optimal route and seeks the optimal conductor profile for a distribution power system network. The final package, designed to work on a PC, will be an extremely useful tool for the design engineer. The second ES is an alarm processor and is based on a hypothesis approach. It is designed to present the alarm messages to the operator in a summarised form. The alarm processing ES was intended to fit into an existing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. The main functions and methodology of both ES are explained with illustrative examples given
