Abstract :
A Faraday rotator technology for CO2laser systems is discussed. The ferrimagnetic spinel CoCr2S2appears to be the most promising material for large aperture devices. Precise measurements were made for the rotation at the principal laser lines and these agree with available thoery. The magnetic field dependence of the rotation indicates saturation at about 4 KOe. The 10μm transmission is adequate for many applications but improvements in the radiation damage resistance are required for high-power applications such as laser fusion.
