Abstract :
Hard magnetic properties of Alnico 5 are very sensitive to the applied cooling rate under a magnetic field. A new experimental device has been designed, which allows to cool samples at a constant speed in the gap of an electromagnet. Cooling rates can be varied from 5°C/min. to 170°C/min, and the magnetic field can be turned on/off at any time. Results show that the optimum cooling rate for highest magnetic properties shifts from 22°C/min. before tempering to 50°C/min after tempering. The critical temperature for the effectiveness of the magnetic field is 837 ±5°C.
