Abstract
This paper is a brief introduction to the automation of the design of very-large-scale integrated circuits (VLSI). The field of design automation has grown so large in the last twenty years that a complete treatment would require an encyclopedia. What follows, therefore, is only a sketch of the history, state of the art, and current key problems of the automation of VLSI design.
