Abstract :
Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) in monomode optical fibre using a 1.3 ¿m semiconductor laser source is reported for the first time. A nonreflecting fibre defect may be accurately located at a range exceeding 17 dB one-way loss by observing the cessation of the Rayleigh backscattered signal.
