Abstract :
Some design possibilities for high-Tc superconducting magnetic energy storage systems are proposed. Conventional SMES systems are reviewed and considerations for achieving high-Tc performance are discussed. A significant difference from conventional SMES is the use of liquid-nitrogen cooling systems which in turn influences the design with respect to cryogenic stability, support for the axial magnetic force, thermal insulation and the specifics of the refrigeration system.
