Abstract
A technique for adaptive estimation of source symbol probabilities is introduced, based on an infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering method. Symbol probabilities are estimated efficiently by means of exponential weighting, and used in conjunction with arithmetic coding. Experimental results indicate that better compression is achieved than with other comparable probability estimation methods.
