Abstract :
Mach-Zehnder waveguide modulators are driven by surfaceacoustic waves (SAW). Frequency modulation is possible as well as optical mixing of two oppositely propagating SAWs Experiments have been performed between 20 MHz and 265 MHz SAW-frequency at light wavelength 0.633 ¿m. 20 mW acoustic power yields 1.2 rad of optical phase sweep.
