  • Abstract
An overview is given of the development of computer technology in China as well as recent research activities. The author also reviews the work of the major centres of computer development and some of the major Chinese initiatives, such as the Chinese `Cray´, which incorporates unique diagnostic facilities to improve its operational characteristics. China is committed to bring its technological capabilities in line with those of Western nations and, to foster co-operation, new economic zones have been created to enable Western capital to be invested. Computer initiatives in these areas play an important role in the Chinese economic objectives
