Abstract :
Over the last fifteen years, a wide variety of visual communication systems have been introduced. Past experience with their use for business teleconferencing, telemedicine, and two-way cable television services has fallen short of expectations. This experience is reviewed and issues are identified which may influence the direction of future applications.
