Abstract
The bit error rate performance of an optical receiver using superlattice avalanche photodiodes (SL-APD) is demonstrated for the first time. These photodiodes have an excess noise factor of 0.37, which is much lower than conventional APDs. The minimum detectable power of -32.2 dBm is obtained at a bit rate of 1.8 Gbit/s.
