Forecasts of a huge climatic shock to the Earth may be ignored. However the fact remains that the Earth is getting warmer. Experts have warned that carbon dioxide and sodium dioxide emissions must be controlled if catastrophe is to be avoided. However, developing countries, with their expanding populations, will increasingly demand energy to improve their standards of living. They will almost certainly first of all use their indigenous fossil fuels to meet this demand, thereby increasing the existing levels of CO2 and SO2 . The developed world, therefore, must start now to consider what steps it can take to achieve sustainable development. This article explores the options available
