Abstract :
Expressions for magnetically induced optical extinction in a particulate system containing a mixture of fine and coarse particles are obtained for two different field configurations. It is shown that for one such configuration the extinction versus applied field curve exhibits an extremum. Experimental data on magnetically induced extinction in certain graphite dispersions are compared with the theoretical results.
