Abstract
Air-cooled heat exchangers (ACHEs) are commonly used in the manufacturing processes of petrochemical facilities. These coolers are typically driven by electric motors placed in locations that make regular maintenance and inspection very difficult. The effects of weather, stresses caused by belt loading, and adjustable speed drive (ASD) operation add to the severity of this application. All these factors combine to form an operating environment that will dramatically shorten the life of stock electric motors. This article will explore the ACHE application as well as the modifications that can be made to a driving motor that will ensure prolonged operation.
