  • Abstract
The Kerr-type nonlinearity in an amplifying fibre may initiate the spontaneous formation of short pulses in Er3+-and Nd3+-fibre lasers with intracavity frequency shifters. A numerical model and experiments are presented which show that besides a single pulse per cavity roundtrip, higher order soliton-like solutions exist.
