Abstract :
A general expression for the dispersion coefficient in a multi-component structure is derived and applied to step-index fibres with depressed inner cladding. The fundamental mode spot size and the sensitivity to a change in index differences, core radius and wavelength are then evaluated in the case of dispersion-free propagation.
