Abstract
A novel beam propagation algorithm is presented that eliminates errors caused by modelling tapered optical structures with staircase approximations. In consequence, highly accurate results are obtained with a substantial improvement in computational efficiency. The algorithm is developed from a nonorthogonal coordinate system that intrinsically describes the taper geometry and can be implemented using conventional beam propagation techniques
