Abstract
A brief review is given of relevant past work on the methods used for calculating the important circumferential stress generated in the windings of a coil due to the currents flowing in the magnetic field of the coil. The results obtained from these methods are then compared with the thick and thin cylindrical shell approximations in the case of the coil used in the Fawley superconducting motor developed at International Research and Development Company, Ltd.
