Abstract :
A record number of contamination related outages occurred on Florida Power and Light (FPL) transmission lines during Christmas of 1991 and resulted in an investigation of in-service insulator performance. The field investigation process used was enhanced by improvements in outage data recording. Also used in the analysis were weather information, the results of completed accelerated aging tests of polymers, and specially conducted tests on the effects of weathering steel stain on porcelain insulators. Specific insulator problems were identified and actions taken to reduce the possibility of recurrence
