Abstract
A measurement method is described where an optical spectrum analyzer capable of detecting modulated light is sufficient for characterizing the fundamental aspects of the optical fiber amplifier. The gain and the noise figure are measured as functions of both input power and wavelength. It is also pointed out that the spectral small-signal gain should be measured under constant saturation condition.<>
