Abstract :
The design, construction and testing of a hybrid magnet system which provides fields up to 30 T is described. The system consists of a superconducting magnet which generates 7.5 T in a 40 cm bore and a family of watercooled insert magnets operating at 10 MW. The superconducting magnet has an overall current density of nearly 6500 A/cm2and a surface heat flux of 0.5 W/cm2. In addition, the paper describes the helium management system whereby both helium and refrigeration are recovered from the magnet cryostat.
