Abstract :
The authors examine industrial needs and the university environment. They report the results of three years´ work at creating a university-based laboratory for expert systems. They describe sample projects illustrating successes and failures at properly balancing the universities´ role in technology transfer, and they suggest an approach enabling schools to develop significant relationships with outside groups. The authors believe that this approach will interest small and medium-sized companies, groups and departments in large corporations, secondary companies supporting large corporations, and universities seeking effective ways to interact with local industry.<>
