Abstract :
A description is given of the Manic 5A (additional capacity), the first Hydro-Quebec powerhouse entirely under station-integrated computer control. With four new units for peak-load supply, it completes the Manic 5 power plant complex associated with the Daniel Johnson Dam along the Manicouagan River. The powerhouse offers a total of 1080 MW of additional power and embodies innovative, state-of-the-art computer-controlled operation management of an entire plant and its associated substations. The discussion covers: security and reliability: architecture; data acquisition and control unit; interfacing with powerhouse equipment; human-machine interfaces; central and remote control units; automata development and maintenance station; local area networks; and operating modes.<>
