Abstract
New self-acting, gas-lubricated sliders developing negative pressure on their bearing surfaces, called new self-acting (NSA) head sliders, have been submitted for the attainment of high recording density in computer disk files. Their flying behaviors and recording performance are experimentally investigated. The results indicate that the NSA head slider can achieve close proximity between their bearing surfaces and a surface of a high speed rotating magnetic disk, and also can minimize wear of their bearing surfaces and the disk surface. The write/read characteristics show that the NSA head slider is more suitable for high density recording.
