Abstract :
A plausible approximate state of magnetisation for anisotropic permanent magnets is that in which the magnetisation remains constant in magnitude but follows everywhere the direction of the total internal field, taken as the sum of the anisotropy field and the field components due to the magnetisation distribution itself. This state can be attained by numerical iterative methods, both for a single magnet and for pairs of magnets, and the corresponding remanences and the axial and transverse forces may also be obtained. Calculated results are given for idealised SmCo5(effectively uniform magnetisation) barium ferrite and hypothetical materials. The limitations of the model and the way in which it may elucidate the behaviour of real materials are discussed.
