Abstract :
A numerical approach based on the finite-element method is described for the analysis of curved optical waveguides. Curvature loss is evaluated simultaneously with the propagation constant and the field distribution. Both TE-like and TM-like modes are systematically formulated. Numerical examples on the propagation characteristics of curved rib waveguides are given. The results for curvature loss of curved rib waveguides agree well with those obtained by experiments and the method of lines
