Abstract :
The effects of waveguide losses on equivalent-step-index (ESI) determination are investigated with Millar´s method as an example. The fitting of spot-size data when the second-mode cutoff wavelength is underestimated leads to the use of an inappropriate formula or the deduction of a too-small ESI radius. In the latter case the ESI numerical aperture will still be given with good accuracy.
