Abstract :
The pursuit of high quality lighting and improved energy efficiency has resulted in an increased use of electronics to overcome lamp problems. This trend has grown dramatically over the last decade. Advances in switch mode power supply technology have made this possible. Electronic circuits are being used both in conjunction with, and as a replacement for, 50 Hz chokes to obtain improved lamp performance. A review of these developments is presented. The advantages derived from operating lamps with electronic circuits are described, together with circuitry techniques used to achieve these improvements.
