Abstract
Loss increase characteristics of optical fibre in cable filled with water are reported. Drastic loss increase around 1.24 ¿m is observed for both graded-index and single-mode fibres. The origin of the loss increase is found to be due to hydrogen gas diffused into the silica glass interstitially.
