Abstract :
The gain an Er/P-doped integrated optical waveguide amplifier has been calculated as a function of waveguide core design, pump power, and background loss. The optimum core width varies from 2 to 3 mu m for pump powers close to the threshold for amplification up to 3-5 mu m for high gain operation.
