Abstract
From Brownfield site to functioning manufacturing plant in just 11 months, Rolls-Royce Inchinnan entered existence as it means to continue - on schedule, within budget and at the forefront of technology and working practices. Conceived as the company´s global flagship factory for the new millennium, the compression systems plant was purpose-built to provide a blueprint for success that the rest of the Rolls-Royce group will follow. The state-of-the-art facility near Glasgow, has been designed from the shopfloor out, constructed to meet a set of criteria developed by Rolls-Royce to ensure optimum effectiveness in the production process. The first of the company´s ´focused´ factories, Inchinnan utilises simple layouts based on flow - with machines and resources arranged for easy operation - and standardised, team-based working practices. Focused factories are an essential development in the company´s drive to deliver low cost, high throughput, benchmark performance on its chosen ´make´ components. Bringing all the value adding manufacturing operations under one roof is at the heart of Inchinnan, allowing Rolls-Royce to optimally design workflows, add value and eliminate waste.
