Abstract
The reflection acoustic microscope may be used without modification to record the total SAW attenuation composed of substrate loss and radiation into the coupling fluid if sufficiently short RF pulse bursts are used. By way of example, grain scattering losses in bearing steel are estimated after estimation and subtraction of the substantial SAW radiation losses from the measured attenuation.
