Abstract :
A thin film head design for use in high density recording with such a media as sputtered γ-Fe2O3thin film disks is discussed. Output response and pattern peak shift are theoretically analyzed to determine the optimum pole face length of a thin film head. Based on the above analysis, some types of thin film heads were prepared. Then, with sputtered γ-Fe2O3thin film disks, basic write/read characteristics and timing margin were measured at a recording density of 24,000 BPI with 2 by 7 coding at a 3 MB/s data transfer rate. Results obtained show reasonable agreement with theoretical analysis. We concluded that a thicker pole face length must be used in high density recording.
